Celebrating a major milestone with a 5th birthday party for the ages
Until now, our celebrations had been small gatherings with family and friends

One of the greatest joys of watching our son Finley grow up has been witnessing his growing appreciation for milestones and special occasions. Most recently, his excitement for his fifth birthday was truly contagious — not just because he was turning 5, but because he was about to have his first big birthday party with friends. As a parent raising a child born with Alagille syndrome, I never take these birthdays for granted. Each one feels like a significant milestone worth celebrating.
Although five years have passed, the early months of Finley’s life remain etched in my memory. I can still close my eyes and find myself back in the neonatal intensive care unit, where my wife, Dani, and I endured two agonizing weeks, torn between the hospital and being away from our older son, Jackson, while waiting for answers about Finley’s condition. I remember every step I took toward admitting him to the local children’s hospital about a month later, after hearing the dreaded words “failure to thrive.” Now, seeing him stable and thriving in pre-K, I cherish every single day.
Finley’s anticipation for his birthday party was palpable. About a year ago, after attending a friend’s birthday, he asked on the way home, “Can I have a party like that?” Up until then, our celebrations had been small gatherings with family and close friends at home — a reflection of the circumstances surrounding his birth in 2021 with a rare genetic disorder and the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Understandably, our family was especially cautious during his earliest years.

Three months before his birthday, Finley enthusiastically began planning. He chose his own theme — a Mario-themed party at the local YMCA kid zone — and insisted on inviting all his friends from day care and the neighborhood. My wife and I set everything in motion to bring his vision to life.
As the big day approached, Finley talked about his party nonstop. His excitement was so intense that I started to worry he might feel let down once it was all over!
When the big day finally arrived, Finley was absolutely over the moon. Surrounded by friends, laughter, and plenty of cake, joy filled the room. Watching him play and celebrate was a true delight, and the happiness on his face was priceless. In those moments, it’s astonishing to remember a time when I didn’t know how many birthdays he would have. I paused to reflect on how far he’s come and felt deeply grateful for every milestone.
I love sharing Finley’s birthday story because, while birthday parties are such ordinary experiences, for us, they’re powerful reminders to appreciate each year. His contagious joy inspires me to savor every moment and carry that gratitude forward.
